Class of 2021 Families:

Thank you for taking time to share your thoughts about graduation ceremonies this year for our graduating classes at Central Coast High, Marina High, Monterey High, Monterey Adult School and Seaside High. The two options proposed last week were either an in-person, traditional ceremony at the Monterey County Fairgrounds with up to four ticketed guests per graduate or a drive through ceremony at WeatherTech Laguna Seca Raceway. Survey respondents overwhelmingly selected the traditional ceremony at the Monterey County Fairgrounds.

The district and your student’s high school are working aggressively behind the scenes to ensure this year’s graduation ceremonies are special for our Classes of 2021. As noted in the previous message, the date of Tuesday, June 1st remains the same; however, the times have changed as follows:

Schedule of Graduations

  • Marina High School: 9:00 am at the Pattee Main Arena
  • Central Coast High School: 11:00 am at the Payton Stage
  • Seaside High School: 1:00 pm at the Pattee Main Arena
  • Monterey Adult School: 3:00 pm at the Payton Stage
  • Monterey High School: 5:30 pm at the Pattee Main Arena
Important Information

Provided below is important information heading toward graduation day. When students begin to pick up their caps and gowns, and other items, additional information, such as required entrance tickets and assigned seating and instructions will be provided.

  • Each graduate will be allowed up to four guests, who are living in the same household, to be seated together in a pod distanced six (6) feet apart from a separate family pod. Tickets are non-transferable from household to household.
  • In addition, MPUSD and its high schools will follow the California Department of Public Health March 2021 guidelines related to commencement ceremonies. All commencement ceremonies must adhere to the following CDPH requirements and modifications:
    • All attendees, including school staff, performers, students and families are counted toward any occupancy capacity limit.
    • If multiple ceremonies are planned for a single day, schools must allow for at least two hours between ceremonies to prevent mixing across attendees.
    • Limit attendee groups to a household unit. People from the same household do not need to be six feet apart.
    • Audience seating must be fixed or marked, with readily identifiable signs to indicate by section, row, and seat. Marked seats should clearly define space for individuals with appropriate space per person (no blanket reservations or group areas). All commencement ceremonies shall adhere to attendance limitations as defined within the current CDPH Outdoor Seated Live Events and Performances Guidance. Outdoor, in-person ceremonies are permissible, consistent with this guidance.
  • All graduates and guests must adhere to social distancing guidelines of no closer than 6 feet apart from their family pod, and must wear a facial covering at all times unless a graduate is taking it off for the LifeTouch photo opportunity after crossing the stage and receiving a diploma.
  • Graduates are to arrive 45 minutes prior to their ceremony time and report to the student staging area. Once a student enters the staging area, they will need to remain with their graduating class for the remainder of the ceremony - exiting and re-entry will not be permissible to ensure we adhere to required protocols. Families will not be allowed in the staging area, but can begin entering the site ceremony venue for their assigned seating.
  • Family members (ticketed guests) must arrive together as one group no earlier than 45 minutes prior to a ceremony, as well, and must immediately locate their seating and avoid congregating with other groups of families and/or your graduate who will be prepping with other graduates.
  • Graduates and their families are guests of the Monterey County Fairgrounds and are expected to follow all Monterey County Fairgrounds guidelines as well as expectations from our school sites.
  • All graduation ceremonies will be streamed LIVE on MPUSD TV (the.mpusd.net/mpusdtv) and LifeTouch Photography will be onsite capturing a photo of graduates as they exit the stage with their diploma.
  • We understand that families will want to take photos of their graduates; however, to ensure we are able to prepare and clean for the ceremony following your graduate’s school, we kindly ask that family members (ticketed guests) exit the main fairgrounds seating area immediately following the ceremony in a socially distanced fashion.
More site specific information from your site and guidelines from Monterey County Fairgrounds will be provided in early May. We look forward to gathering together, in a safe and celebratory way and honor our 2021 graduates.
