Athletics

Welcome to the Monterey High School Athletics page. We are very pleased that you have interest in our athletic program, and we hope that your experiences will be positive as well as educational. Participation in athletics is a privilege. Athletics can give students the opportunity to learn leadership skills, foster self-confidence, self-discipline, organizational skills, decision-making skills, and encourage setting goals. We believe a comprehensive athletic program is vital for the educational development of our students.

Once students have been selected to represent MHS, Home of the Toreadores, there are often many questions, which both students and their parents may have regarding our Athletic Program. We hope our website and athletic handbook will be of assistance, and we encourage you to use it as a reference throughout the year. Please contact the Athletic Director with any questions.

Greetings Dore families,

Typically, this is where I would welcome you to the 2020-21 season.  I would tell you how excited I am at our prospects for the upcoming season.  I’d talk about how much Coach, their staff and, most importantly, our student-athletes depend on and appreciate your support.  However, that might all ring hollow right about now.  We spent the last fourth of the year in “distance learning” and dealt with the premature ending to our spring seasons. There is so much uncertainty surrounding what school and athletics -heck our country- are going to look like in the coming months, it is difficult to wrap our minds around it.

Please know we are all doing everything we can to act in the best interest of our kids, our coaches and our community. Currently, we are working with several entities, including the County of Monterey, the City of Monterey, MPUSD, CIF and PCAL to determine how to best proceed. Until we are given the go ahead by the County medical director, we have to continue with a  “wait and see” approach.  I realize this is frustrating.

In the meantime, we need to be prepared to hit the ground running when the restrictions are loosened and/or lifted. What does that mean? Here are a few items I suggest:

  1. Is your student-athlete academically eligible? If not please make sure they are signed up for summer school. Contact the counseling department to sign up.

  2. Given the resources you have available at home, help your student-athlete develop a fitness plan. Reach out to Coach Lusk for suggestions.

  3. Ensure your student-athlete is eating well and getting proper sleep.  Research shows high school age students need ten hours of sleep. One of the potential benefits of the stay in place order is the opportunity to get more rest.

  4. Encourage your student-athlete to stay in communication with their coaches. Ask coaches about the mental approach to the game. Great time for strategy sessions.

  5. Later this week I will reopen SportsNet so you can register your student-athlete. Additionally, we are trying to arrange a Sports Physical Night, so you don’t have to go out and find a doctor to complete the physical.

Please know I will communicate with you as soon as I have more information.  I do look forward to working with you to make sure our student-athletes have the best experience possible.

Do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have.

Dores Rising,

Jeff Dellis
